They are separate cruise facilities on different parts of the island, so the first thing you should do when planning your excursion is find out which port your cruise ship is scheduled to use.

📍 Port of Roatán — Coxen Hole

Port of Roatán is located in Coxen Hole, the capital of Roatán.

This port is associated with cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, Virgin Voyages and others.

Because the port is close to the town of Coxen Hole, passengers have access to shops, restaurants, transportation and local businesses once they leave the terminal area.

For travelers who want to venture beyond the cruise terminal, Coxen Hole can be a convenient starting point for excursions around the island.

🌴 Mahogany Bay

The other major cruise facility is Mahogany Bay, located in the Dixon Cove area on the southern side of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay was developed by Carnival Corporation and is primarily used by Carnival Corporation brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line.

Unlike Coxen Hole, Mahogany Bay has a more resort-style cruise complex. Passengers can find shopping, restaurants, bars and access to a private beach area without having to travel far from the ship.

Coxen Hole can be a better starting point if you're planning to explore more of Roatán, visit local attractions or book an excursion that takes you around the island.

Mahogany Bay can be ideal if you want convenience, shopping and an easy beach experience close to the ship.

Neither port means you're visiting a different island. They're two different cruise gateways to the same beautiful island of Roatán.

And this is why checking your cruise itinerary before booking an excursion is so important.

Roatán is surrounded by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, one of the world's most important coral reef systems.

⏰ Don't Try to Do Everything

This is one of my biggest recommendations for a Roatán cruise day:

Pick one or two things you really want to experience.

You may be tempted to combine a beach, snorkeling, wildlife encounter, shopping and sightseeing all into one day.

But Roatán is an island, not an amusement park.

Roads can be winding, distances can be deceiving and popular attractions can take longer to reach than they appear on a map.

Give yourself time to actually enjoy the experience.

After all, you're on vacation.

☀️ What Should You Pack for a Roatán Port Day?

What you bring will depend on your plans, but a few basics are always useful:

If you're snorkeling or spending the day at the beach, a waterproof bag can be especially handy for keeping your phone, money and other belongings dry.

💰 Should You Book a Cruise Excursion or Explore on Your Own?

There isn't one right answer.

Booking through your cruise line can provide convenience and peace of mind, particularly if you're unfamiliar with the island.

Independent excursions can sometimes provide smaller groups, more flexibility and opportunities to work with local tour operators.

If you decide to book independently, pay close attention to the excursion duration and transportation arrangements. You need to leave enough time to get back to the correct cruise terminal before all-aboard.

And remember that Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay are different ports. Don't assume an excursion pickup at one port will be waiting for you at the other.

And perhaps that's what makes Roatán such a memorable cruise destination.

You can spend the day snorkeling above a coral reef, relaxing on a beautiful beach, exploring the island, meeting local people or simply sitting beside the Caribbean Sea and enjoying the view.

Whatever you choose, don't forget to slow down for a minute.
